“It's hard to know where to begin. As someone who is Multiracial, it's easy to fall into the land of racial ambiguity. So I'm neither Asian or Black, and yet I am both. And as someone who's married to a Black man and his raising a Mixed child, it has been become increasingly more important that I surround our family with images that are positive and authentic to Black life. So that means representation in the books that we reach our son, and it means that we watch documentaries on Saturday nights on PBS. For every negative image and moment of self-doubt or hate, I want to fill him with a thousand times more images, experiences and relationships that show him that 'yes, Black is beautiful.’”
