“I am exhausted. To be a Black woman is to be this perennial all-knowing, all-loving, all-caring, indestructible being. Somehow, I have to look brave when I'm pulled over, so I don't transfer my fear to my boys; somehow, I have to block out the yelling, honking, and cursing white men who terrorize me as I drive down the street; somehow, I have to smile through the constant requests to qualify my presence in the room or at the table. To be in this skin and joyful is a beautiful rebellion against every obstacle real or imagined.”
