“I feel Black people have to combat stereotypes daily. Some people see this as a burden, but I view these moments as times to eliminate ignorance, and educate my peers about Black culture and Black people. If I could, I would never change the fact that I am Black. I once wrote, ‘I am never tired of being Black, but I wonder if Black is sick of being me? I ask myself this because it is 2017, and Black still isn’t free.’ If I, as a Black person, don’t work daily to show others my value as a human, I will forever be incarcerated. Equality is a concept that the world still struggles to understand. This forces Black people, and many other groups, to go the extra mile in everything that we do to prove to the rest of the world that we are to be valued and we belong here too.”
