“As a Black, transracial adoptee raised in a White Dutch family, I have come to realize that the collective of diverse voices from Blacks in America is also integral to my story. The needs that I have as a transracial adoptee, and the needs of many adoptees of color walking similar paths are that we are seen, valued, heard, and that our stories are included in our family's and in society's shared memory, instead of being erased or minimized. Black History Month is about learning and remembering the significant contributions and sacrifices made by Black Americans for this country. It is also about understanding the pain, humiliation, oppression, and struggle that many Black Americans endured and transcended so that they too could secure respect, human rights, educational, social and political equality for their families and communities for generations.”
